As you’re aware, this years event will be part of the Horwich Festival of Races event, which means the cycle route will be on a closed road circuit. Here’s a quick preview of the Cycle Route. 16km (10 laps of the circuit)
The Get Active team have now mapped out the new run route for this years NHS Fun Tri with Bolton Council. It’s slightly different to previous years in that it is shorter (4.3km, 3 laps of the circuit) and takes you on the outskirts of Horwich town centre, however, all runners will still finish in Old Station Park.
We’re looking for volunteers to support this year’s event, if you are interested in helping out on the day, whether it be lane counting, run marshalling, giving out medals please get in touch. [email protected]
If you have any remaining questions regarding your race please take a look at the race brief and the frequently asked questions.
Email queries will not get a reply from today as the Tri team have relocated to the race venue.
See you Sunday
On race day we have several people taking photographs during the event. These pictures will be available for people to download for free after the event.
We have photographers covering the pool, the run section and the finishing area. New for this year we also have a drone which will be taking aerial pictures.
So Keep smiling!
The start times for all teams are now online. Participants are set off in groups of similar ability swimmers. Please be on pool side 15 minutes before your allocated time. Backstroke is not permitted. Times can be found here
With only a few weeks to go until race day it might be worth having a read of the most common infringements in triathlon, so that you don’t pick up a penality. The following is taken from Triathlon England webite:
Drafting
Competitors are not permitted to draft off other competitors during the cycle section of a race. The draft zone for sprint and standard distance events is 7m (approximately three bike lengths) x 3m and starts at the front edge of the bikes front wheel. Remember to keep left at all times when you are not overtaking and that if you are overtaken it is your responsibility to drop out of the overtaking cyclists draft zone or you could receive a penalty.
Helmets
Helmets used for events must meet the minimum standards of ANSI Z90, SNELL B90, EN1078 or equivalent, a CE mark is not an approved standard. Helmets must be on and securely fastened before removing your bike from its transition space and remain fastened until you have re-racked your bike.
Outside Assistance
Triathlon, Aquathlon and Duathlon events are individual sports and should be completed as such. Athletes are responsible for themselves and their equipment during events and should at no time receive assistance from anyone who is not part of the event team. The only exceptions relating to outside assistance are for medical issues or when safety may be compromised.
Transition Area
Each athlete has their own specified space within the transition area within which they are required to keep all required equipment, you are not permitted to ‘mark’ your space. It is important that your equipment does not hinder the progression of other athletes and you do not interfere with others equipment as this will be considered as ‘unsporting impedance’ and you are likely to be penalised. You are not allowed to take friends and family into the transition area with you.
When leaving the transition area you are not allowed to ride your bike until you are passed the ‘mount line’. Similarly when returning to the transition area you are required to be off your bike before the ‘dismount line’. Transition area’s are often hectic with a number of people all trying to head in the same direction and following the mount and dismount requirements maintains a level of safety in this area.
Race Numbers
Athletes are required to wear their race number at all times during the cycle and run sections and they must be clearly visible. During the cycle section the number needs to be displayed to the rear and during the run it needs to be displayed at the front, the use of a race belt can assist with this. Your race number needs to be worn as provided by the event organiser and should not be cut down or altered in any way. Additional body markings that may have been provided by the event organiser should be used in conjunction with the official race number and not considered as a replacement.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct
You should always treat race officials, event volunteers, spectators and other competitors with respect and courtesy. Try to complete the requests of the race official and event volunteers as it is likely they are asking you to do something to benefit you, or trying to help you avoid receiving a penalty. If you have a query or a complaint about something which has occurred during the race report it calmly to the race official, fully outlining the issue. At all times, abusive and aggressive language and/or conduct directed at the race official, event volunteers, spectators or other athletes will not be permitted under any circumstances. This also applies to parents/guardians/accompanying adults at children’s events.
Course
You are required to follow the course outlined in the competitor information pack and the events race briefing. Not completing the specified course or requisite number of laps will result in you being disqualified. At all times you should follow rules which relate to safety and the requirements of the Highway Code. Any athletes seen to be breaking these will receive a penalty.
Banned and Illegal Equipment
The use of items such as mobile phones and mp3 players is prohibited during events. If you are seen to be using a banned or illegal itemyou will be warned and given the opportunity to rectify your behaviour, if you do not then you will be disqualified.
The start times for all solo competitors are now online. Participants are set off in groups of similar ability swimmers. Please be on pool side 15 minutes before your allocated time. Backstroke is not permitted. Times can be found here
Start times for the relay teams will be published after the closing date as we still have a few places left.
We are just ordering the T shirts from out friends at Decathlon. The tri team have modelled them in the office and have come to the conclusion that the sizes are slightly on the small size. So when you collect your T shirt it will be a size up from what you originally requested. e.g if you put down for a small size you will actually get a medium.
Hopefully this will ensure that everyone gets a size suitable.
The team behind the Bolton Triathlon are delighted to announce that entries for this years event are now open. the event will take place on Sunday 7th June at Turton Sports Centre.
We have listened to the feedback from last years race and for this year we:
will relocate the transition area to bring it closer to the improved finishing area
will increase the signage on both the run and bike routes
have changed the date to avoid clashing with the Edgworth trail race
You can enter both the solo and relay events here
Results for yesterday triathlon can be found on the uk results website
We are pleased to announce that the Railway Pub which is adjacent to the sports centre will play host to both competitors and friends and families. The pub will open at 10am and will be offering 10% of food and drinks. In order to take advantage of this offer please show your race number. The Railway has recently undergone a major refurbishment and offers a fantastic range of food and drinks. The presentation will also take place at the Railway once all competitors have finished.
Every event relies on volunteers to run smoothly and safely. Without people willing to give up a couple of hours there would simply be no races to compete in.
The Bolton Fun Tri is no exception, to run the event we need around 30 volunteers in a range of different roles. in particular we are looking for volunteers to:
Work in the pool including
Length counters this is a sitting down role making sure that everyone swims the correct number of lengths. The race starts at 8 am and you will be finished by 10am.
Time keepers. This is also a sitting down role and as the name suggests involves recording the times of swimmers as they exit the pool. You’ll be needed poolside at 7.30am and finished by 10am
Marshalling on the route.
Both the run and bike course need marshals to make sure that our competitors don’t get lost You’ll be needed around 8.30am and finished by around 11.30am.
If you can spare a couple of hours please get in touch either email [email protected] or text 07595515903.
We think this years run course is a classic! After leaving the transition area competitors will turn left onto Chapletown Road. They will continue on this rather undulating road running on the left hand side pavement. After 2.3km competitors will cross the road by the pillbox and descend into Jumbles Country Park. There is a short technical descent which requires athletes to take care. Once this challenging downhill had been conquered then it’s a beautiful run along side the bank of Jumbles reservoir. This lovely trail turn into the quiet residential Grange Road. Competitors will follow this until they reach Bromley Cross railway station. Marshalls will guide competitors across the tracks leaving only the short sprint to the finishing arch within the school grounds.
Triathlon clubs are the lifeblood of our sport. They are mostly run by volunteers who give up their free time to support and encourage ordinary people to undertake extraordinary achievements.
In recognition of the fantastic work and contribution that these clubs make, one of our event sponsors Peak XV Tri Coaching are offering cash back to local clubs*
For every club member who enters the triathlon during the month of May Peak XV will refund £3 to their club. It’s that simple.
*To qualify the triathlon clubs must appear on the list of Triathlon England affiliated clubs in the North West area.

The team behind the NHS Triathlon are excited to announce big changes for the 2019 race. Whilst we can’t give too much away at this stage, we can tell you that after every race we collect feedback from competitors to inform and improve the race for the following year.
So for 2019 we have taken all the bits that competitors love including the relaxed atmosphere, fantastic friendly volunteers, sociable start time, great finishing area, and a quality medal and will be running the event from a totally new venue with great parking and a single large transition area.
We listened to the feedback regarding both the bike and run routes and we will be returning to the original distances. The swim will remain a pool based 400m, the new 20k bike course will be on quiet country roads with a few hills to keep things interesting. The new 5k run course that we are planning will be partly off road taking in some of the glorious scenery that the area has to offer!
We are working closely with our partners and will be in a position to confirm the date of the event over the next few days and entries will open in November!
